Electric bus added to Karachi’s mass transport system

Karachi: The Sindh government on Tuesday launched the electric bus project to Karachi’s mass transport system – as part of the public-private projects – by introducing the first vehicle of the fleet, according to news sources. Transport Minister Awais Qadir Shah announced that the first electric bus in the city is to initially run between Merewether Towe and Sohrab Goth. The initial fare is decided at PKR 4 – a kilometre. He promised that 100 such buses will be plying the city routes by the end of the year. Moreover, Minister Shah said that ten electric buses will be launched during the trial run – with a fare of PKR 10 from one stop to another, while PKR 4 will be charged per kilometre from the passengers. He also revealed that more buses will be added to the fleet each month and acknowledged that the transport department had been not able to work in its full capacity and that has caused problems for the masses. Regarding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects, Minister Shah said that 250 new buses will be brought to the city and that the work on projects was underway.
